Democratic Rights Campaign (1), Brisbane, 1977

(1) Forum held on the University of Queensland campus on 6 September 1977 two days after the street-march ban by Bjelke-Petersen on 4 September 1977. This forum is significant because it is the first public meeting held in response to Bjelke-Petersen’s ban to prevent the Anti-uranium movement from mobilising to stop the mining and export of uranium from Brisbane’s wharves. The Forum at the UQU complex passed a motion that a march in defiance of the ban take place on the following day to link up with a rally of Trade Unionists in Roma Street Forum. Several hundred police stopped the march at the entrance to the University.
